The Practical Dairy Training Centre (PDTC) Kenya recently played a significant role in a collaborative innovation mission focused on advancing sustainable livestock farming in Kenya. This mission, organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nairobi, in partnership with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, brought together 14 Dutch companies and institutions specializing in various aspects of the dairy value chain.
During the four-day mission, a delegation visited the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST), where DTC Kenya is currently hosted. This visit highlighted the impactful collaboration between public and private sectors in knowledge transfer within the dairy industry.
Key highlights from the visit include:
- Innovative Training Methods: DTC Kenya demonstrated its innovative approach to dairy farm management training, including the use of Kucheza, a game that simulates dairy farm management. This practical tool allows trainees to gain hands-on skills in a simulated environment.
- Youth Engagement: Eric Kimalit, Manager of DTC Kenya, emphasized the growing interest of youth in the dairy sector and the crucial role of technology in training.
- International Exchanges: The importance of knowledge exchange between Kenyan and Dutch trainees was highlighted, showcasing DTC’s commitment to international collaboration and learning.
- Addressing Industry Challenges: The visit underscored DTC’s role in addressing challenges in dairy farming education, such as limited access to practical training farms and the need for more hands-on learning approaches.
This innovation mission serves as a testament to the growing importance of practical, technology-driven training in the dairy sector. It also reinforces DTC Kenya’s position as a key player in advancing sustainable livestock farming practices in the country.
